The breasts consist of the mammary glands and their ducts that run towards the nipple. Mammary glands produce breast milk, and their canals open in the nipple. The glands are surrounded by a connective tissue layer and an adipose tissue layer, both support and protect the breast. Structure and size of the breasts vary between women, and they are important in breast feeding and diagnosing breast cancer.

What can be an aesthetic breast problem?

The most common complaints related to the breasts include oversize or asymmetry, saggy breast (ptosis), and being unsatisfied with small breasts. Also, development disorders and tubular breasts are also a common problem.

Answers from the doctor – What are breast surgeries?

What types of surgeries do we perform?

Several types of surgeries are performed to improve shape and size of the breasts at our clinic, based on individual needs. The most common interventions are the following:

Breast reduction

In case of oversized breasts, breast reduction helps reaching the ideal size and shape, reducing physical strain on the patient and improving her quality of life.

Breast lift

In case of soggy breasts, breast lift restores original position and shape of the breasts, especially after breast feeding or advanced age.

Breast enlargement

In case of small breasts, enlargement surgeries are performed, which usually involves implantation. This intervention increases the volume of the breasts and improves their general aesthetics.

How are aesthetic breast surgeries performed?

Consultation
It is important that the patients are informed in detail about the course of the surgery, recovery phase and aftercare. Careful preparation an appropriate consultations contribute to success of the surgery and patient satisfaction.

01

Surgical intervention
Breast surgeries usually take about 1 to 3 hours, depending on the type of intervention.

  • Breast enlargement:
In case of a breast enlargement, a pocket is formed in the appropriate tissue layer, which in most cases is the layer behind the pectoralis major muscle. The implant is placed into it.
  • Breast lift and reduction:
During breast lift and reduction, the excess skin, fat or glandular tissue are removed to re-shape the breasts, achieving the desired shape and size.

02

After surgery
Most breast surgeries can be performed as one-day surgeries, which means, the patient stays overnight at the hospital.

03

Rehabilitation and follow-up
After the surgery, increased amount of physical resting is needed, and the patient has to wear a compression bra. Intensive sport activities should be avoided during the first month.

More information

When are breast surgeries not recommended?

At a young age: Aesthetic breast surgeries are not performed before puberty, since the body is still developing, and hormonal changes can affect the result.

Before pregnancy: If you are planning to get pregnant in the near future, it is recommended to postpone breast surgeries. Hormones significantly change the size and shape of the breasts, and certain surgical techniques may damage the milk ducts, which can impair the ability to nurse a baby.

Health status: In case of any severe health issues or diseases, a medical consultation is needed first to determine the safety of the surgery, as well as its most appropriate time.

Considering these factors, appropriateness and timing of the surgery are always debated during individual consultations.

Preoperative consultation:

It is important for the patient to receive detailed information, and that all information is available for her. To make the best possible decision, it is suggested to have multiple consultations before an intervention, or ask for an opinion of another surgeon.

How to prepare for surgery?

Before a breast surgery, our specialists will provide detailed information how you should prepare for the intervention. It may include restrictions in diet, modification in your medicines, mental health support, and arrival on fasting state on the day of the surgery. It is important to follow the instructions of the doctor to contribute to the success of the intervention and your quicker recovery.

What are the risks of this surgery?

  • Infection: All surgical interventions involve the risk of infection. Antibiotics and proper wound care can help minimise this risk.
  • Bleeding: Postoperative bleeding may occur, which may require further interventions.
  • Scarring: All surgical interventions may cause scarring. Scars may fade over time, however, in some cases they might be permanent.
  • Asymmetry: There may be asymmetry between the breasts, and it may require further corrective surgery.
  • Problems with the implant: In case of breast implants, there is a risk of capsular contracture, leakage or rupture, which may require replacement or removal of the implant.
  • Changes in sensitivity: Changes in sensitivity of the breasts or nipples may occur after a breast surgery, and it may be transient or persistent.
  • Ability to nurse: Certain surgical techniques may damage the milk ducts, which can affect the ability to nurse a baby.

What happens after the surgery?

After the surgery, we will provide you proper postoperative care for your recovery. It is important to follow the instructions of our specialists regarding wound treatment, medicines, and recommendations on diet, so the operated area can recover and heal quicker.
