Cardiology

Cardiology is the field of internal medicine, which focuses on the heart and the vessels. Tasks of cardiologists include diagnosing and treating coronary diseases, arrhythmias, heart failure, heart valve disorders, high blood pressure, as well as the inflammatory diseases of the heart. The goals of cardiological examinations are recognising the heart diseases, determining the risk factors, and avoiding them if possible.

Furthermore, cardiologists treat patients with heart diseases, assess their conditions, and determine the treatment methods. Cardiology also deals with cardiological risk assessment before non-heart surgeries, as well as checking the effect of non-cardiological diseases on the heart muscle, for example in case of chemotherapy or irradiation.

Dr Tamás Szili-Török is an internationally renowned cardiologist, recognised authority figure of the diagnosis and treatment of arrhythmias. Arrhythmias are in the focus of his life work, which has led to world-class results in the field of cardiology.

Early years and carrier: Dr Tamás Szili-Török was born in Szeged in 1968. He has been interested in cardiology since a young age and decided to understand arrhythmias in depth. He completed his medical studies at the Faculty of Medicine of the Albert Szent-Györgyi Medical School, University of Szeged with excellent results, and graduated summa cum laude.

Expert of Arrhythmias

After obtaining his medical degree, the professional career of Dr Tamás Szili-Török focused on the diagnosis and treatment of arrhythmias. As a young physician, he first gained experience at the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy, Szent-Györgyi Albert Medical Centre, Szeged, Hungary. Afterwards, he continued his education in cardiology at the Department of Cardiology, Royal Perth Hospital, Australia. Subsequently, he performed clinical and research job for three years at the Erasmus MC in Rotterdam, in the Netherlands. During his studies, he became familiar with the state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and procedures. He obtained his second PhD degree here under the title “Ultrasound imaging in clinical electrophysiology”.

Head of the Division of Electrophysiology

Because of his expertise and leadership skills, Dr Tamás Szili-Török soon became the head of the Division of Electrophysiology at the Gottsegen National Cardiovascular Centre, Budapest. He applied his management experience at the Erasmus MC in Rotterdam, when he was head of the Division of Electrophysiology. Since 2023, Dr Szili-Török has been the head of the Cardiology Centre, Department of Internal Medicine, Szent-Györgyi Albert Medical Centre, Szeged, Hungary.

World-class work and international recognition

Dr Tamás Szili-Török has earned international recognition with his professional work. The Cardiology Centre led by him provides world-class services for patients with arrhythmias, and has introduced innovative procedures, such as modern cardiac arrhythmia mapping technologies and robotic catheterisation treatments for arrhythmias. His expertise also includes the implantation of pacemakers and implantable defibrillators.

Treatment of cardiac arrhythmias:

  • Atrial fibrillation (AF)
  • Atrial flutter
  • Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT)
  • Ventricular fibrillation/tachycardia
  • Inherited heart conditions
  • Cardiomyopathies

Interventions:

  • Catheter ablation
  • Pacemaker implantation
  • Defibrillator implantation

Dr Erika Balázs

Az emberi fizikai teljesítmény – mind a betegségben szenvedőké, mind az egészségeseké – az érdeklődésem középpontjában áll. Egész életemben sportoltam. A sport preventív szerepe a kardiológiai kórállapotok megelőzésében elengedhetetlen. Évtizedek óta invazív kardiológusi munkám mellett részt veszek kardiológus konzulensként a sportolók ellátásában. Így végül 2019-ben sportorvosi szakvizsgát is tettem.

My main area of interest in the care of athletes is exercise stress diagnostics. As a student of Professor Somfay, I study the factors influencing not only the performance of patients but also that of healthy persons and the impact of physical training on it. I endeavour to provide athletes and their coaches with information that can be integrated into practical work, which provides a reliable basis for optimising training work and determining a health adapted workload.
